About theatre

Lviv National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre in the name of Solomiya Krushelnytska is one of the most beautiful Opera Theatres in the Europe. It was constructed in 1900, but it is not the first Opera House in Lviv. The first opera performances have had place in Lviv since the end of 18th century.

In 1895 a competition was announced. The first prize was awarded to Zygmunt Gorgolewski – director of Lviv Art School. This experienced master was graduated from the Berlin Construction Academy.

The Theatre was built in classical tradition with Renaissance and Baroque elements. This mixture of different styles and elements is in the great harmony. It was the theatre of the capital, because Lviv in 18-19 th century was the capital of the region Halychyna – the administrative division in the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

In the interior the diversity of decor is striking. Painting, relief ornaments, sculptural composition, the marble and golden details, the mosaic floor – everything is beautiful in the vestibule, in the hall for the spectators and in the mirror hall for the intervals.

The repertoire of the Theatre is traditionally very rich and has the hight level. Here the operas by different europian composers are on: D. Verdi, D. Puccini, D. Rossini, H. Donicetti, R. Leonkavallo. P. Mascagni, Z. Bizet, P. Chaikovsky and ukrainian composers M. Lysenko, S. Hulak-Artemovsky, U. Meitus and others as well. All operas go in their original languages.

The ballet performances are: “Swanlake” and “Nutskraker” by P. Chaikovsky, “Zhizel” by A. Adam, “Romeo and Julietta” by S. Prokofiev, “Esmeralda” by C. Pugni, “Koppelia” by L. Delib and others.

The theatre has had the tours in Italy, Spain, Poland, France, Swiss, Holland, Libanon, Austria, Germany.
