Ihor Lacanycz was born on July 11, 1935 in village Velyky Berezny in Transkarpatia. He studied at the Lviv M. Lysenko State Conservatory. Almost all of his life he devoted to Lviv State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre of S. Krushelnytska (in 1970-74s he was the chief conductor of Donetsk Opera and Ballet Theatre). Since 1995 he worked part-time as artistic director in Lviv and chief conductor in M. Jalil Opera and Ballet Theatre in Kazan.
\nAn infinitely energetic man, he had over 130 operas, ballets and operettas in his repertoire. Among his best performances there are \u201cLa Gioconda\u201d by Amilcare Ponchielli, \u201cOthello\u201d by G. Verdi, \u201cWar and Peace\u201d by S. Prokofiev, \u201cPrince Igor\u201d by A. Borodin, \u201cThe Queen of Spades\u201d by P. Tchaikovsky, ballets \u201cThe Swan Lake\u201d, \u201cThe Nutckracker\u201d, \u201cThe Sleeping Beauty\u201d by P Tchaikovsky, \u201cMedea\u201d by R. Gabichvadze, \u201cSpartacus\u201d by A. Khachaturian and others. In his native theatre he always cared about the preservation of Ukrainian classics, boldly set to pre-read operas and ballets by contemporary composers Y. Meytus, V. Gubarenko, B. Yanivsky, M. Karminsky and others. His \u201cbeloved\u201d opera from national repertoire was \u201cThe Stolen Luck\u201d by Y. Meytus \u2013 one of the iconic operas of Lviv Theatre.
