About show

Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) is Russian composer, whose brilliant creative masterpieces have been generally recognized all over the world. He introduced new music – music of the 20th century – together with other innovators: K. Debussi, B. Bartok, I. Stravinski and others. His huge creative heritage consists of 8 operas, 7 ballets, 7 symphonies, 9 piano sonatas, 5 piano concerts, 6 cantatas and other.
Ballet “Romeo and Juliette” was written in 1936 and is based on drama by W. Shakespeare and is one of the best compositions of S. Prokofiev. The première took place in 1940 in Saint-Petersburg and the first staging in Lviv was in 1968. Production about undying love of Romeo and Juliette – the offspring of the rival families Montecci and Capuletti – has gained a great appreciation of the spectators.

The second production of 1988 shifted the story of beloved into modern times and showed the cruelty and violence of the society.

The new staging was caused by not only the interest to beautiful music but also by its extraordinary interpretation made by the previous staging directors: choreographer Herman Isupov, scenographer  Yevhen Lysyk, conductor Ihor Latsanych.
