“Walpurgis night” ballet-scene from opera “Faust” Ch. Guonod

Libretto
Grand Pas from the ballet “Paquita” by L. Minkus

The Grand pas from Paquita, with choreography by Marius Petipa and music by Ludwig Minkus
This Grand Pas, choreographed for the wedding of the ballet’s main characters was all of this major, full-length ballet that was to survive into the 20th century. This, of course, is not fortuitous, for the Grand Pas is certainly one of the pinnacles of Marius Petipa’s achievement. The Grand Pas, an example of an extended classical dance ensemble, is marvelously structured, providing an opportunity for nearly all the leading soloists to display their virtuosity — and to recklessly compete with each other. Among them is the soloist who dances the title role and who has to demonstrate an unheard of level of skill and ballerina charisma. This choreographic painting is often referred to as the ceremonial portrait of a Company or its visiting card for, in order to be able to dance it, the Company has to possess a truly dazzling array of skills.

“Carmen suite”

A ballet set to music of Rodion Shchedrin and Georges Bizet.
The story is about tragic fate of the gipsy girl Carmen and her lover soldier Jose
whom she deserted for young toreador. Relationship of the characters and the death
of Carmen at the hands of Jose appeared to be unavoidable doom.

“Walpurgis night” ballet-scene from opera “Faust” Ch. Guonod

Charles Gounod (1818-1893) enriched the French opera music, called grand opera and opera comique, with new genre of lyric opera. Its peculiarities were: lyric interpretation of any plot, emphasis on interrelation of the characters, great number of lyric scenes and lively melody. “Faust”, the first lyric opera, was staged in 1859 in Theatre Lyrique in Paris. In 10 years the remake of this opera was shown in Paris Opera. According to the style of the French grand opera, Charles Gounod added to it a ballet scene, which presents bacchanalia in the mountains during Walpurgis night when as a legend says witches are observing their great sabbath.
